Book List: The Alchemist

The Alchemist by: Paulo Coelho

If you're having a hard time figuring out what your passion is, if you're wondering what your purpose is and what your contribution to this earth will be than I suggest you pick up this book called "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. In short, "The Alchemist" is about a young shepherd who embarks on a journey in search of a treasure. Along this journey the shepherd boy meets a Gypsy woman, a king and an Alchemist who all lead him in the direction of his treasure. The importance of this book is that in search of a treasure the boy discovers a much greater treasure within himself. He discovers the power of following his heart and his dreams.

I really like "The Alchemist" because instead of your typical motivational book that blatantly tells you how to discover your passion, the author allows the reader to learn this concept on their own through someone else's journey. I read "The Alchemist" for the first time years ago when I was in college and I didn't quite understand it despite all of the great reviews. Recently, I decided to read it a second time and it makes a lot more sense to me now than it did before. While writing this post I was able to understand the reason why the important concepts in this book didn't register with me the first time I read it and that is because I wasn't seeking my passion before. I didn't care about the importance of following your dreams until I decided to do that myself. Writing this post just reminded me how amazing this book is. "The Alchemist" is definitely a favorite.
